The Four Quadrants of Development

The Four Quadrants of Development

For beginners and experts as well, all development activities fit into four major categories represented here as "quadrants". Any change in one of these sectors will impact all the others, sometimes unexpectedly.

Many of these tasks go on at once - differing circumstances make the sequence unique for each project. Separating the myriad tasks of development into these four quadrants helps you stay sane and focused.

The process of development always involves activities in all four quadrants; every project must go through it. A group of artists goes through the same steps as the developer of a large housing or office development. The following pages break down according to the quandrants. Be sure to first read our artist space basics [0].

The development process initially might appear to be complex and overwhelming. Quite frankly, it is overwhelming if you look at all the steps necessary to achieve your goal. The key to cutting the project down to a more manageable size, however, is understanding the big picture and taking things ONE STEP AT A TIME. And, when a step in one quadrant is bogged down, move into another. There are plenty of "hats to wear" in the world of building development.

If you are a group of artists seeking to develop space, be sure to check out our section: Artists as Developers. [0]
