Helpful Hints

Buying property is a complicated experience. You are probably wondering, "How much of this do I have to do to purchase property?" Well, the more you know, the less likely you will spend money on things you should not do.

So here is a quick list of hints:

  1. Take a first time homebuyers class and finish with your class. It may be difficult to make up classes at the time you are trying to purchase.
  2. Take advantage of one-on-one counseling. The information will be tailored to your situation and you will receive very helpful next best steps.
  3. Research your real estate professionals in advance. When you actually find the property, you may not have the time to do the proper research.
  4. Read the Real Estate pages regularly so that you will have an idea of the housing market and mortgage interest rates.
  5. Review your credit reports and know your credit score. Research shows that many people could have received a better interest rate if they knew that their credit was good enough for a good rate.
  6. If your credit is not good, work on improving it before applying for a mortgage.
  7. Do not skip the home inspection and the real estate attorney. If you cannot afford to pay for investigating property worth over $100,000, you probably cannot afford to buy.
  8. Beware of mortgages with very low payments relative to what you are borrowing. Those loans may request a balloon payment (large payment) when you can least afford it. To learn more about mortgage products click here http://www.mtgprofessor.com/Default.htm).
  9. When shopping for a mortgage, ask the lender for a sample payment schedule for up to 10 years. It will demonstrate whether or not the payments will increase.
  10. Get advice from friends and family that own property in addition to seeking professional assistance.
  11. Review your budget before you buy and make necessary adjustments to your spending habits.
  12. Know what you want but keep an open mind. There are so many variations of home ownership opportunities. Be open to the possibilities.
